When Do We Use ‘Was’ and ‘Were’?

We use was et were to talk about finished actions or states in the past. These actions or states do not continue now.

  • Use was for singular subjects: I, he, she, it.
  • Use were for plural subjects: you, we, they.
  • We often use time expressions like yesterday, last week, two days ago, or in 2020.

How Do We Form the Positive Past Simple of ‘Be’?

Forming the positive Past Simple of to be is very simple. You just need the correct form (was or were) after the subject.

The complement can be a noun, an adjective, or a place.
