Erreurs courantes chez les hispanophones

Here are some common mistakes English learners make when talking about TV programmes:

  • Programme contre. Program: Both are correct! Programme is British English. Program is American English. Langcom uses British English, so we say programme.
  • Series contre. Episode: A series is the whole story with many parts. An episode is just one part of the series. You watch an episode of a series.
  • Using film for TV: A film (ou movie) is usually shown in a cinema or is a single, long story. We use TV programme ou TV show for things you watch on television regularly.

Questions fréquemment posées

What is the difference between a series and a film?

A series has many parts (episodes) and continues over time. A film is usually one complete story, watched in one sitting.

Can I say TV show instead of TV programme?

Oui, TV show is very common, especially in American English. TV programme is more common in British English. Both are correct and understood.

Why is it the news and not a news?

News is an uncountable noun in English. We do not use "a" with uncountable nouns. We use the because it refers to specific information.
