Most verbs in English are regular. To form the Past Simple for these verbs, we simply add -ed к основной форме глагола.
- Walk → walked
- Play → played
- Start → started
There are a few spelling rules to remember:
- Verbs ending in -e: Add only -d. Live → lived, Arrive → arrived.
- Verbs ending in consonant + -y: Change -y в -i и добавить -ed. Study → studied, Try → tried.
- Verbs ending in vowel + -y: Just add -ed. Play → played, Enjoy → enjoyed.
- Verbs ending in CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) with a stressed short vowel: Double the last consonant and add -ed. Stop → stopped, Plan → planned.
А как насчёт неправильных глаголов?
Many common verbs in English are irregular. This means they do not follow the -ed rule for the Past Simple. Their forms change in different ways.
You need to learn these irregular verbs by heart. There are no simple rules for them, but many are used very often.
- Go → went
- See → saw
- Have → had
- Eat → ate
- Read → read (одинаковое написание, разное произношение)
The more you read and listen to English, the easier it will be to remember these forms.
How Do We Make Questions and Negatives in the Past Simple?
To make questions and negative sentences in the Past Simple, we use the auxiliary verb did (или didn't for negatives) and the base form of the main verb.
- Positive: I played football yesterday.
- Negative: I didn't play football yesterday. (NOT I didn't played)
- Question: Did you play football yesterday? (NOT Did you played)
Remember, the main verb always returns to its base form after did или didn't.

Spanish speakers sometimes make specific mistakes with the Past Simple:
- Использование was/were with main verbs: Do not say I was went to the shop. The correct form is I went to the shop. Помните, was/were is only for the verb 'to be' or continuous tenses.
- Not using the base form after did/didn't: Неправильно: Did you saw him? Правильно: Did you see him? The auxiliary did carries the past tense, so the main verb stays in its base form.
- Confusing regular and irregular verbs: Avoid saying I goed to the party. The correct irregular form is I went to the party.
- Over-using the Past Simple for actions that continue: If an action started in the past and continues now, use the Present Perfect, not the Past Simple. Incorrect: I lived here for five years (and I still live here). Правильно: I have lived here for five years.
