How Do We Talk About Jobs in English?

When you want to ask about someone’s job, you can use simple questions. When you answer, remember to use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the job title.

Asking About Jobs:

  • What do you do?
  • What is your job?
  • What does he do?
  • What is her job?

Errori comuni per chi parla spagnolo

Spanish speakers sometimes make two common mistakes when talking about jobs:

  • Missing ‘a’ or ‘an’: In Spanish, you might say “Soy médico.” But in English, you must say “I am a doctor.” oppure “She is a nurse.” Always use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a singular job title.
  • Chef vs. Cook: Both prepare food, but a chef is usually a professional, often in charge of a kitchen in a restaurant. A cook can be anyone who prepares food, including at home. For example, “My mother is a great cook.” but “Gordon Ramsay is a famous chef.”
