Was ist das Präsens?
The Present Simple tense helps us talk about things that happen regularly, habits, routines, and general facts.
- I eat breakfast every morning. (A habit)
- They live in London. (A general fact)
- We study English at Langcom. (A routine)
Für I, you, we, und they, the verb stays in its base form (e.g., eat, live, study).

How Do We Ask Questions with 'I', 'You', 'We', and 'They'?
To make a question in the Present Simple for these subjects, we use the word Do at the beginning.
Der Aufbau ist einfach:
- Do + Subject (I, you, we, they) + Base Form of Verb + ?
Schau dir diese Beispiele an:
- Do I need to bring a pen?
- Do you like coffee?
- Do we have class tomorrow?
- Do they speak Spanish?
The main verb (like need, like, have, speak) never changes. It is always the base form.
Short Answers: Yes, I do / No, I don't
When someone asks you a Present Simple question with Do, you can give a short answer. This is very common in English.
- Positive Short Answer: Yes, + Subject + do.
- Negative Short Answer: No, + Subject + don't. (don't ist die Abkürzung für do not)
Let's see some examples:
- Do you work here? → Yes, I do. / No, I don't.
- Do they live near here? → Yes, they do. / No, they don't.
- Do we need more milk? → Yes, we do. / No, we don't.

Do you play sports? - General Facts: Dinge, die immer wahr sind.
Do birds fly? - Preferences: What someone likes or dislikes.

Spanish speakers sometimes make these mistakes:
- Forgetting 'Do': In Spanish, you often just change your voice to ask a question. In English, you must use Do.
Falsch: You like coffee?
Rechts: Do you like coffee? - Adding '-s' to the verb: The verb stays in its base form after Do.
Falsch: Do you likes coffee?
Rechts: Do you like coffee? - Using 'Are' instead of 'Do': Are is for the verb 'to be' or Present Continuous. Do is for other actions in Present Simple.
Falsch: Are you work here?
Rechts: Do you work here?
Häufig gestellte Fragen
Why do we use 'Do' to ask questions in the Present Simple?
Wir verwenden Do because it is the auxiliary verb for the Present Simple tense. It shows that the sentence is a question, not a statement, for most verbs.
Can I use 'Do' with 'he', 'she', or 'it'?
Nein, das geht nicht. Do mit he, she, oder it. For these subjects, we use Does to ask questions. For example, Does he work here?
What form is the verb after 'Do' in a question?
Das Verb nach Do (oder Does) is always in its base form. For example, Do you eat? nicht Do you eats?
Is 'Do you like…?' the same as 'Are you liking…?'
No, they are different. Do you like…? asks about a general preference or habit (Present Simple). Are you liking…? is Present Continuous and is used for an action happening right now, but it's not common with verbs like 'like'.
