We use the Past Simple for:
- Completed actions in the past: She finished her homework an hour ago.
- A series of completed actions: He woke up, ate breakfast, and left for work.
- Past habits or routines: When I was a child, I played outside every day.
Common time expressions used with the Past Simple include:
- Yesterday
- Last week/month/year
- Two days ago
- In 2020

Most verbs in English are regular. To form the Past Simple for these verbs, we simply add -ed to the base form of the verb.
- Walk → walked
- Play → played
- Start → started
There are a few spelling rules to remember:
- Verbs ending in -e: Add only -d. Live → lived, Arrive → arrived.
- Verbs ending in consonant + -y: Change -y to -i and add -ed. Study → studied, Try → tried.
- Verbs ending in vowel + -y: Just add -ed. Play → played, Enjoy → enjoyed.
- Verbs ending in CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) with a stressed short vowel: Double the last consonant and add -ed. Stop → stopped, Plan → planned.
What About Irregular Verbs?
Many common verbs in English are irregular. This means they do not follow the -ed rule for the Past Simple. Their forms change in different ways.
You need to learn these irregular verbs by heart. There are no simple rules for them, but many are used very often.
- Go → went
- See → saw
- Have → had
- Eat → ate
- Read → read (same spelling, different pronunciation)

How Do We Make Questions and Negatives in the Past Simple?
To make questions and negative sentences in the Past Simple, we use the auxiliary verb did (أو didn't for negatives) and the base form of the main verb.

- Negative: I didn't play football yesterday. (NOT I didn't played)
