Adverbs of frequency tell us how often something happens. They include words like always, usually, often, sometimes, hardly ever, , 和 never. These words usually go before the main verb in a sentence, for example, I always drink water. However, if the verb is to be (am, is, are), the adverb goes after it, as in She is always happy. Learning these adverbs helps you talk about your daily routines and habits clearly. They are very useful for describing how regularly you do things or how often events occur.

What Are Adverbs of Frequency?

Adverbs of frequency are words that tell us how many times an action happens. They answer the question How often?

  • Usually (80-90% of the time)

  • Sometimes (20-40% of the time)
  • Hardly ever (5-10% of the time)

Where Do Adverbs of Frequency Go?

The position of an adverb of frequency is important. There are two main rules for A1 English.

Rule 1: Before the main verb.

Most of the time, the adverb goes before the verb that describes the action.

  • I usually wake up early.
  • They often play football.

Rule 2: After the verb to be.

If the verb in your sentence is am, is, 或 are, the adverb goes after it.

  • He is often late.
  • We are always happy.

How Do We Ask About Frequency?

To ask about how often someone does something, we use the question How often...?
