English tenses help us talk about when things happen: now, regularly, or in the past. For A1 learners, the most important tenses are the Present Simple, Present Continuous, and Past Simple. The Present Simple describes habits, routines, and facts, like I work every day. The Present Continuous describes actions happening right now, for example, I am working now. The Past Simple talks about finished actions in the past, such as I worked yesterday. Mastering these three fundamental tenses is crucial for building basic sentences and communicating clearly in English. They are the building blocks for more complex ideas and will help you express yourself confidently in everyday situations.

We use the Present Simple for things that are always true, happen regularly, or are facts.

  • For habits and routines: I drink coffee every morning.
  • For general truths or facts: The sun rises in the east.
  • For schedules and timetables: The train leaves at 7 AM.

The form is usually the base verb, but for he/she/it, добавляем -s или -es.

When Do We Use the Present Continuous?

We use the Present Continuous for actions happening right now, at this moment.

  • For actions happening at the time of speaking: She is reading a book now.
  • For temporary situations: They are staying in a hotel this week.

The form is am/is/are + verb + -ing.

When Do We Use the Past Simple?

We use the Past Simple for actions that started and finished in the past. The time is usually mentioned or understood.

  • For completed actions in the past: I visited my friend yesterday.

For regular verbs, we add -ed (например, walked, played). For irregular verbs, the form changes (e.g., go → went, eat → ate).

Распространенные ошибки у носителей испанского языка

Люди, говорящие по-испански, иногда допускают следующие ошибки:

  • Confusing Present Simple and Present Continuous: You might say I work now вместо I am working now. Помните, am/is/are + -ing is for actions happening right now.
  • Using Present Simple for finished past actions: You might say I go to the shop yesterday вместо I went to the shop yesterday. Always use the Past Simple for actions that are finished in the past.
  • Irregular Past Simple verbs: Many verbs do not add -ed in the past. For example, eat становится ate, а не eated. You need to learn these irregular forms.
