Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) 1

What is the Teaching Knowledge Test (the TKT)?

The Teaching Knowledge Test (the TKT) is a series of exams created by Cambridge ESOL for English language teachers. It is intended to evaluate candidates’ understanding of theories about language, language use, and the background to and practice of language teaching and learning.

Five modules make up the TKT: TKT Modules 1, 2, 3, TKT: CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), and TKT: YL (Young Learners).

Each module of the TKT contains 80 questions that test the subject using objective activities like matching and multiple-choice questions. The TKT programs emphasize understanding of teaching and learning.

There are no admission prerequisites for the TKT, such as prior teaching experience or language or teaching certifications, however candidates are advised to have at least an intermediate level of English, such as CEFR/ALTE B1, PET or IELTS band 4 for all modules.

Candidates for all modules must also comprehend a vocabulary of more than 500 words that describe the practice of English language teaching (ELT). Each TKT lesson and course of our online study guide includes a list of these terminology.
