The Present Perfect tense connects the past with the present, showing actions or experiences that happened at an unspecified time before now, or actions that started in the past and continue to the present. We form it with have أو has plus the past participle of the main verb. For example, I have visited London means you went there sometime in your life, but the exact time is not important. We also use it for recent actions that have a clear result now, like She has lost her keys, which means she doesn’t have them now. This tense is very useful for talking about your life experiences, things you have done, or things that have recently happened and are still important now. It helps you share information without needing to say the exact time. Understanding this tense is key for A2 English learners to describe personal history and current situations.

What is the Present Perfect Tense?

The Present Perfect tense helps us talk about things that happened in the past but are connected to the present. We use it when the exact time of the action is not important or not known.

It is like saying, “This happened sometime in my life,” or “This just happened, and it’s important now.”

How Do We Form the Present Perfect?

The Present Perfect has a simple structure:

  • We use the auxiliary verb have أو has.
  • Then, we add the past participle of the main verb.

Remember:

  • الاستخدام have من أجل I, you, we, they.
  • الاستخدام has من أجل he, she, it.

Regular and Irregular Past Participles

Most verbs have regular past participles. We add -ed to the base form.

  • playplayed
  • finishfinished

Many common verbs have irregular past participles. You need to learn these.

  • seeseen
  • eateaten
  • gogone

When Do We Use the Present Perfect?

There are two main situations for A2 learners:

  • Life Experiences: To talk about things you have done (or not done) in your life, without saying exactly when. The experience is important, not the time.
  • Recent Actions with a Present Result: To describe actions that finished very recently, and the result is clear now.

Common Words with the Present Perfect

We often use specific adverbs with the Present Perfect:

  • Ever (in questions): To ask if someone has had an experience at any time. Example: Have you ever eaten sushi?
  • Never: To say you have not had an experience at any time. Example: I have never seen a ghost.
  • Just: For actions that happened a very short time ago. Example: She has just arrived.
  • Already: For actions that happened sooner than expected. Example: They have already finished their homework.
  • Yet (in questions and negative sentences): To ask if something has happened up to now, or to say it hasn't happened. Example: Has he called yet? / He hasn't called yet.

Present Perfect vs. Past Simple: What's the Difference?

This is a common point of confusion for Spanish speakers.

  • Present Perfect: Focuses on the connection to the present. The time is not specific or is still continuing (e.g., today, this week). Example: I have visited Paris. (Sometime in my life, no specific time.)
  • Past Simple: Focuses on a finished action at a specific time in the past. Example: I visited Paris last year. (The time is clear: last year.)

If you say when something happened, use the Past Simple. If you don't say when, or if the time period is not finished, use the Present Perfect.

الأخطاء الشائعة لدى المتحدثين باللغة الإسبانية

Spanish speakers often make these mistakes:

  • Using Past Simple instead of Present Perfect for experiences:
I visited London. (If you mean 'sometime in your life' without a specific time)
    I have visited London.
  • Forgetting the auxiliary verb have/has:
    She seen that movie.
    She has seen that movie.
  • Using the base form or simple past instead of the past participle:
    We have eat sushi.
    We have eaten sushi.
He has went to the shop.
He has gone to the shop.
