Learning the names of rooms in English is essential for describing your home and understanding everyday conversations. In English, each part of a house has a specific name, like kitchen for cooking or bedroom for sleeping. These words are very common and important for A2 level learners. Knowing them helps you talk about where you live, what you do in different areas, and understand descriptions from others. For example, you might say, “I cook in the kitchen”“My bed is in the bedroom.” This vocabulary is fundamental for daily communication and for describing your environment. It also helps you understand directions or descriptions of places. You will use these words when talking about daily routines, family life, and even when looking for a place to stay. Mastering this vocabulary will significantly improve your ability to communicate about your living space and prepare you for tasks in exams like the A2 Key, where you might need to describe a picture of a house or talk about your home.

What are the main rooms in a house?

Every house has different rooms for different activities. Here are the most common ones:

  • "(《世界人权宣言》) living room is where people relax, watch TV, or spend time together.
  • "(《世界人权宣言》) kitchen is the room where you cook food. It usually has a stove, a fridge, and a sink.
  • A bedroom is a room for sleeping. It has a bed.
  • "(《世界人权宣言》) bathroom is where you wash yourself. It has a toilet, a sink, and usually a shower or a bath.
  • "(《世界人权宣言》) dining room is a separate room where you eat meals, especially dinner.

What about other areas of a house?

Besides the main rooms, houses often have other important areas:

  • A hallway (or hall) is a long, narrow passage that connects different rooms.
  • "(《世界人权宣言》) garden is an outside area, usually with grass, flowers, or trees.
  • A garage is a building or part of a building for parking a car.
  • A balcony is a platform on the outside of an upper floor of a building.
  • Stairs are steps that connect different floors of a house.
  • An attic is a space or room directly under the roof of a house.
  • A basement is a floor of a building that is partly or entirely below ground level.

How do we use prepositions with rooms?

When you talk about being inside a room, use the preposition in.

  • I am in the kitchen.
  • She is in her bedroom.

For outside areas like a balconygarden, you usually use inon depending on the specific context, but in the garden is common.

  • The children are playing in the garden.
  • We have breakfast on the balcony.

For the general location of your home, use at home.

  • I am at home.

西班牙语母语者常犯的错误

Spanish speakers sometimes make mistakes with room vocabulary:

  • Using ‘room’ too generally: In English, we use specific names for rooms, not just ‘sleep room’ or ‘cook room’.
错误: I sleep in the sleep room.
右: I sleep in the bedroom.
  • Using ‘at’ instead of ‘in’ for specific rooms: Remember to use in when you are inside a specific room.
错误: I am at the kitchen.
右: I am in the kitchen. (But I am at home is correct for the general location of your house.)

常见问题

What is the difference between a house and an apartment?

A house is usually a single building where one family lives. An apartment is one home inside a larger building with many other homes. The rooms inside are often similar, but an apartment might have a balcony instead of a garden.

Do all houses have a dining room?

No, not all houses have a separate dining room. In many modern homes, people eat at a dining table in the kitchen or in the living room.

How can I practice this vocabulary for the A2 Key exam?

For the A2 Key exam, you might need to describe pictures of houses or rooms. Practice by saying what you see in each room. For example, “In the kitchen, there is a fridge and a cooker.”“The bedroom has a bed and a window.” You can also practice matching room names to pictures, which is a common task type.
