To ask questions with the verb to be in English, you simply change the order of the subject and the verb. This is called inversion. For example, instead of You are happy., you say Are you happy?. This simple rule applies to all present simple forms of to be. For the subject I, you use Am I…?. For singular subjects like he, she, it, you use Is he/she/it…?. For plural subjects and you, use Are you/we/they…?. Short answers follow the same pattern: Yes, I am. または No, I’m not.. This structure is essential for asking about identity, feelings, locations, and descriptions, making it a fundamental skill for Pre-A1 English learners.

How Do We Form Questions with ‘To Be’?

To make a question with the verb to be, we change the word order. We put the verb to be (am, is, or are) at the beginning of the sentence, before the subject.

  • For statements like I am a student., the question is Am I a student?
  • For statements like She is happy., the question is Is she happy?
  • For statements like They are friends., the question is Are they friends?

    • Right: Are you happy?

  • Missing the verb: Sometimes the verb to be is omitted.
    • 誤り: He tired?
