What Are English Tenses?
Tenses are verb forms that show when an action happens. They tell us if something happened in the past, is happening now, or happens regularly.
For A1 English, we focus on the most common tenses to help you speak about daily life.
When Do We Use the Present Simple?
We use the Present Simple for things that are always true, happen regularly, or are facts.
- For habits and routines: I drink coffee every morning.
- For general truths or facts: The sun rises in the east.
- For schedules and timetables: The train leaves at 7 AM.
The form is usually the base verb, but for he/she/it, we add -s または -es.
When Do We Use the Present Continuous?
We use the Present Continuous for actions happening right now, at this moment.
- For actions happening at the time of speaking: She is reading a book now.
- For temporary situations: They are staying in a hotel this week.
The form is am/is/are + verb + -ing.
When Do We Use the Past Simple?
We use the Past Simple for actions that started and finished in the past. The time is usually mentioned or understood.
- For completed actions in the past: I visited my friend yesterday.
- For a series of completed actions: She woke up, ate breakfast, and left for work.
For regular verbs, we add -ed （例：, walked, played). For irregular verbs, the form changes (e.g., go → went, eat → ate).
How Are These Tenses Different?
It is important to understand the difference between these tenses. They help you express time clearly.
- I play tennis every Sunday. (Present Simple: a regular habit)
- I am playing tennis now. (Present Continuous: an action happening at this moment)
- I played tennis yesterday. (Past Simple: a completed action in the past)
