Adverbs of frequency tell us how often something happens. Their position in a sentence is key: they usually go vor the main verb but danach das Verb to be or an auxiliary verb. Zum Beispiel, I always drink coffee, aber She is always happy. Understanding this placement helps you speak more naturally. These adverbs, like always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, und never, are essential for describing routines and habits. Mastering their use is a fundamental step for B1 English learners to express themselves clearly about daily life and regular activities, making your sentences flow better and sound more native-like.

  • usually (about 90% of the time)
  • often (about 70% of the time)

Where Do Adverbs of Frequency Go?

The position of adverbs of frequency in a sentence is very important. There are three main rules to remember:

  • Before the main verb: Most adverbs of frequency come before the main verb in a sentence. For example, I always eat breakfast.
  • After the verb to be: When the verb is am, is, oder are, the adverb of frequency comes after it. For example, She is usually late.
  • Between an auxiliary verb and the main verb: If there is an auxiliary verb (like do, does, have, can, will) and a main verb, the adverb goes in the middle. For example, They don't often visit.

Special Cases: 'Sometimes' and 'Often'

The adverbs sometimes und often are more flexible. They can also appear at the beginning or end of a sentence for emphasis.

  • Sometimes I walk to work. (Beginning)
  • I walk to work sometimes. (End)
  • Often we go to the cinema. (Beginning)
  • We go to the cinema often. (End)

However, the most common position for these adverbs still follows the main rules (before the main verb).

Asking About Frequency

To ask how often someone does something, we use the question phrase How often...?

  • How often do you exercise?
  • How often is she late for class?

You can answer these questions using adverbs of frequency or other time expressions like once a week, every day, oder twice a month.

Häufige Fehler bei Spanischsprechern

A common mistake for Spanish speakers is placing the adverb danach the main verb. In Spanish, adverbs often follow the verb, but in English, they usually come before it.

  • Falsch: I eat always breakfast.
  • Richtig: I always eat breakfast.

Another error is using never with a negative verb. Never already means 'not ever', so you don't need another negative word.

  • Falsch: I don't never go there.
  • Richtig: I never go there.
